The Transfăgărășan is a paved mountain road crossing the southern section of the Carpathian Mountains of Romania, rated as the most spectacular roads in the world. It is the second-highest paved road in the country after the Transalpina. It stretches 90 kilometres. The road connects Transslyvania with Muntenia, starts at Bascov, near Piteçti. It follows the valley of the river Argea, and after crossing the peak, it descends to Cartisoara in the Olt valley, where the road ends.
The Transfăgărășan height 2134 meter and has several sharp hairpin turns. Average speed through The Transfăgărășan is about 30km/h. The road only open from June to November due to snow that is blocking the road. The road, built in the early 1970s as a strategic military route.
Road condition can be check online, but is written in Romanian. So google translator is required.

Poenari Castle, also known as Poenari Citadel, is a ruined castle in Romania, notable for its connection to Vlad the Impaler. Only access is made by climbing the 1,480 concrete stairs.

Our road trip to the Transfăgărășan was split into 2 parts, as the first attempt failed due to road closure for Triathlon. A friend joined us during our second attempt, 4 weeks later.

Taste a different restaurant before entering the road. Restaurant La Cetate. Wow... look at that serving of Pork Knuckle... Not to my taste though, skin are not crispy, but hard. |

Fall (Autumn) is the best season to visit The Transfagarasan, due to the color of trees. Green, Red, Yellow, Brown... Rather than all Green. |

At the peak... sight of thick snow...
There are stalls selling snacks and souvenirs.
There is also a cable car (Telecabana) which can transport you from the bottom of the mountain to the peak.
